Did your ex leave you with all kinds of bills, a child to raise, and a broken heart?  If you thought the breakup and divorce proceedings were unpleasant, you may be finding out that the aftermath is much worse.  Even if you no longer love your ex, have you considered trying to improve the relationship?  Consider a situation where you need to figure out how to get your ex to pay child support in a timely manner.

Instead of running to the court, or leaving nasty voicemails, it will be to your advantage to try a softer approach.  This may include meeting with your ex before the payments are due.  If you can both manage to get along for just a few minutes, he will feel guilty if he does not send payment on time.  You may even learn that some of his negative behavior is being caused by an inability to get over you.

Regardless of why you broke up with your ex, there were plenty of things that brought you together.   It is very important to respect the power of these elements, as well as the influence they may still be having on your ex.  Interestingly enough, you may even find that some of your own actions are still guided by these same factors.

If you can tap into some mutual positive element of your past relationship, you may find it much easier to get your ex to honor any residual commitments.  Inevitably, tapping into this element will give your ex something to feel good about.  While you may desperately want your ex to be as miserable as possible, that won’t get your bills paid.  Therefore, you will need to think carefully about which goal is more important, and then simply accept what it costs to achieve it.
